| Frommer's Review: One of the most unusual restaurants in Charleston, and one of the best and most exclusive, this formal choice is a winner in cuisine, service, and ambience. Chef/owner Robert Dickson brings a whole new dimension to dining in Charleston. His set menu, served in a long, narrow room that evokes an intimate dinner party, is the town's finest. Guests peruse the menu while listening to music from a pianist. The waiter will explain each course on a menu that is seasonally adjusted. He'll also give you a preview of each wine that you'll be served. Don't be surprised if the chef himself suddenly bursts through the door from the kitchen in the back, singing Oliver's "Food, Glorious Food." Each dish we've ever sampled here has been a delight in flavor and texture, ranging from sea scallops mousse in a Maine lobster sauce as an appetizer, to very tender, rosy duck breast in a yellow-pepper cream sauce. The garnishes served with the dishes -- often ignored in most restaurants -- are especially tasty here, including roasted red pepper or hot fried eggplant. Tossed in a homemade vinaigrette, salads are zesty with wild mixed greens and such vegetables as mushrooms and artichokes. For a main course, dig into a chateaubriand with a demi-glace flavored with mushrooms from the woods, or perhaps steamed salmon. Desserts often include the best and richest chocolate cake in Charleston. It comes with vanilla sauce, strawberries, and almond praline, but perhaps that's gilding the lily. |
| "Great place for a special occasion" Feb 6, 2005: Columbia, SC My husband & I had a very quiet wedding (2nd marriage) and choose Robert's as the place to celebrate afterwards. We were not disappointed. The restaurant has one seating & holds about 35-40 people- it is like a very intimate dinner party. The food was wonderful - everyone has the same appetizer, wine, & dessert but you are given a choice for an entree. Robert (himself) sings a good portion of the dinner (which takes about 2 1/2 hours) and there is a live pianist there as well. He also takes requests & sings special songs for special occasions (such as ours, birthdays, one gentlemen was celebrating retirement & Robert sang "If I Were a Rich Man") I surprised my husband a few months later with a CD of Robert's singing purchased off of his website - it still brings a smile to our faces to hear it. |

"Robert's has great food, service and is great fun" Apr 17, 2005: Germantown, Tennessee My wife and I had the best time we have ever had at any restaurant in the world at Robert's last Saturday night. The food and service was great. Robert's singing of popular tunes certainly added to the evening. I would not hesitate to return to this exceptional restaurant. A great value in my opinion. |
| "A special night!" Mar 14, 2005: Silver Spring, MD We went to Robert's for an early Valentine's Day dinner. It was a delicious treat. The food was great - adventurous and unusual without trying so desperately to be different that it just becomes unpleasant. The singing is a lovely, fun touch. The dinner definitely felt like an event and we will remember it for a long time. It wasn't as romantic as we'd hoped for, but it was very special. |
| "Great night!" Jan 8, 2005: Greensboro, NC If you're thinking about a special night in Charleston, highly recommend this over the other high-end spots. Roberts is relatively small (40 seats?) and provides an outstanding prix fixe menu with beef or fish. Price includes 5 courses plus beer and wine, what's not to like. Even better, Robert sings opera songs between courses and also works the room when he's not in the kitchen. He's professionally trained in both voice and food (plus painted the pictures hanging on the wall), truly somebody who loves what they do. The staff is great and enjoys what they are doing. Much better than our experience at McCradys tavern. Enjoy a special evening. |

My husband got BIG points! This is a unique experience! Posted by Anne from Charleston, SC on 12/06/2003 The tenderloin was "melt-in-your mouth" and the service I had made me feel like I had hired my own personal staff. My wine glass never got empty. I left feeling like I had just had the royal treatment. Make sure to let Robert know if you are there for a special occasion for your personal serenade. Robert's singing is fabulous. I can't believe I waited so long to go - this is like a little piece of Europe right here! |
